UMUNEDE HIV/AIDS /AKUMAZI MEDICAL OUTEACH PROJECT IN DELTA STATE ON 9TH AND 10TH APRIL 2009.

This Project was a joint venture between Mr. Dave Inyere (the Principal) and Missions Aid International (the Executioner). The objective of the project was to provide full and free access to Medicare within the project period, to as many persons as possible; men, women and children in two locations: Akumazi and Umunede of Delta State, Nigeria. The project was planned as a strictly humanitarian endeavor (that is, not for profit). Mr. Inyere’s part was to provide the resources (drugs, promotional materials, lab reagents, accommodation and feeding of personnel and other required facilities) while Missions Aid Int’l was to provide the mUMUNEDE HIV/AIDS /AKUMAZI MEDICAL OUTEACH PROJECT IN DELTA STATE ON 9TH AND 10TH APRIL 2009.

Majority of the personnel: Medical Doctors, Nurses, Laboratory Scientist and Missions Aid staff including technicians and evangelists all arrived on 8th April 2009 in readiness for the program starting the following day.
On 9th April 2009, the program started by 6am with a prayer to acknowledge the Kingship and Lordship of God who alone furnishes us with strength and wisdom for each day’s work. After the morning watch, every worker headed for the venue; Umuocha Primary School, Akumazi-Umuocha; where the program was planned to take place.
On the first day of the program, we had 2 medical doctors, one pharmacist, one ophthalmologist, one Laboratory scientist and several nurses on duty. Eighty-three patients were treated for various ailments on that first day and many more received counseling for various personal life challenges.
The second day being 10th April 2009, the venue was the same Umuocha Primary School and we had two medical Doctors, two pharmacists, two nurses, one ophthalmologist and one laboratory scientist on duty.
One hundred and fifteen patients were attended to on the second and final day of the program. Many that had eye problems were attended to with the presence of the Ophthalmologist and many cases were verified in the mobile laboratory before treatments were administered.
The Obi of Akumazi clan and his cabinet members were all attended to both medically and spiritually as prayers were offered for the betterment of the land of Akumazi clan and the welfare of her people.
Pastors from Missions Aid International carried out evangelical crusades at both Akumazi-Umuocha and Umunede venues with the aim of reaching out to the total man; spirit, soul and body! The first night’s crusade attracted a very large crowd and almost all the people present committed their lives to Jesus Christ with a pledge to begin to live their lives more responsibly. The program was highly appreciated by the people as they gave testimonies of personal benefits regarding their health and their spiritual state.

Umunede HIV/AIDS Program
This historic and successful event lasted for 2 days and was graced with the presence of the Chevron’s HIV/AIDS, Malaria & Tuberculosis Advisor, Project Manager – Delta State SACA with 2 of his staff, Coordinator of HIV/AIDS program in Ika North-East LGA, UBTH VCT team, Director of LAPO (NGO) and her staff, other government functionaries, women, and youths, children etc.
Details are as follows:
The rally began on Thursday 09/04/2009 at about 9:30am. The rally was embarked upon with the rented publicity van of Delta State Ministry of Information, public address unit. It was a team of 8 made of the trained HIV/AIDS peer educator from Akumazi and LAPO staff. The team drove round Akumazi, Umunede and Ekwuoma slowly and while moving songs on HIV/AIDS were sang, fliers were distributed and the team stopped at strategic places such as motor parks, village squares to address the public and invite them for the grand finale rally on Friday 10/04/2009. Fliers, posters and ICT materials were distributed at all these places before the team returned back home about 4:00pm.
On Saturday 10/04/2009 the program started at about 10:00am with HIV counseling and testing {HCT} anchored by UBTH VCT team lead by Princess. The turnout was very impressive as there was long queue of people voluntarily and willing to know their status. A total of 198 people were tested. The sensitization rally was held at Ogbe Model Primary School, Umunede and it started at a few minutes past 12:00 noon with the recognition of special guests, which was anchored by two master of ceremony, the next item on the agenda was the opening prayer, followed by the welcome address handled by Mr. Dave Inyere. This was followed by the goodwill messages from; CNL Advisor – Dr. Tsola Kpiasi, 3 Representatives of NEPWHAN in Delta State and PM Delta State SACA. The next activity on the agenda was given by the guest speaker; Miss Elizabeth Ndimi in Pidgin English and her speech was interpreted in the local dialect of the community by the MC.
The total population of adult participants was over 200. A total of 198 people got tested with 9 testing positive. Out of the 9 persons, 4 have already known their status as positive before and are members of LAPO support group.
ICT materials – free T-shirts, calendars and other HIV/AIDS information leaflets were distributed to all who attended the rally.
