HIV/AIDS 3 DAYS COMMUNITY AWARENESS RALLY HELD AT AKUMAZI UMUOCHA, DELTA STATE FROM 05/04/2007 TO 07/04/2007

Introduction
Utmost Caring World and other partners mobilized by Mr. Dave Inyere stormed four communities in Ika North East LGA of Delta State with the message of HIV/AIDS as well as free voluntary counseling and testing. This historic and successful event lasted for three days and was graced by the presence of the Delta State Commissioner for Health, traditional rulers, other government functionaries, women, and youths, children etc. the program was highly successful and should be replicated in other communities in Delta State according to the Honorable Commissioner. Details are as follows:

The rally began on Thursday 05/04/07 at about 11:00am. The rally was embarked upon with the rented publicity van of Delta State Ministry of Information, public address unit. It was a team of 5 lead by Utmost caring worlds Project Director, Mrs. Angelista Esenwa. The team drove to Umunede market slowly and while moving songs on HIV/AIDS were sang, fliers were distributed and the team stopped at strategic places such as motor parks, village squares to address the public and invite them for the grand finale rally on Saturday 07/04/07. The team was at Umunede market for about 3 hours before moving down to Owerre Olubor market for sensitization. The team spent a good time at Owerre Olubor market on sensitization before moving to Ekwuoma for another round of sensitization rally. They left Ekwuoma back to Akumazi Umuocha community for further sensitization rally and at the same time fliers and posters were distributed at all these places before the team retired back home for the day at about 4:00pm for the day.

The rally began again on Friday 06/04/07 at about 10:00am. With a team of Utmost Caring World Workers [UCW}, Association of positive youths in Nigeria {APYIN}, and a team of local advocacy group from the host community. Two rented vehicles with public address systems were used and the rally started at Akumazi Umuocha community where posters were posted at strategic places, fliers distributed, songs were sang and sensitization speeches made using English language, pidgin and vernacular. The team spent about 3 hours at Akumazi Umuocha before they moved through Umunede market down to Umunede new road, where they had sensitization rally for over 2hours before they moved to Umunede old road community for sensitization rally. From there the team finally came back at about 4:30pm. After about an hour the team proceeded to Umuocha primary school compound for crusade where Pastor Victor Oyezechukwu from Lagos preached on Forgiveness, though there was a late turnout of the people for the crusade but many souls gave their life to Christ and the crusade came to an end at about 8:30pm.

On Saturday 07/04/07 the program started at about 10:00am with HIV counseling and testing {VCT} anchored by Global HIV/AIDS initiative in Nigeria {GHAIN). The turnout was quite impressive as all six VCT points set up by GHAIN had long queues of people voluntarily and willing to know their status. A total of 240 people were tested with 4 of them testing positive.

The sensitization proper started at a few minute past 1:00pm with the recognition of special guests, which was anchored by two masters of ceremony (MC), the next program on the agenda was the opening prayer taken by Pastor Okwuchukwu Ohanedogha of Charismatic Renewal Ministry Agbor. The welcoming address was then taken by Mr. Dave Inyere followed by the goodwill messages from; Delta state commissioner for health, Dr Festus Okunbor, followed by NEPWHAN representative, then the representative of the Association of Positive Youths in Nigeria (APYIN), the GHAIN CT technical officer of Edo State, Mrs Nneka Okey-Amechi also gave her own goodwill message, then the representative of Utmost Caring World, Mrs Angelista Esenwa gave her own goodwill message, followed by a goodwill message from Hon. Chief (Mrs) Pat Ejeteh an indigene of Akumazi-Umuocha. The next activity on the agenda was a cultural dance by a local cultural dance troupe after which a talk was given by the guest speaker; the south- south zonal co-ordinator of NEPWHAN, his speech was interpreted in the local dialect of the community by the MC. The next session was on stigmatization and discrimination and was taken by Otaigiakhi Samuel of Keep Hope Alive Organization of Edo state. Immediately after the Project Director of Utmost Caring World(UCW) spoke on “Christian involvement in HIV/AIDS program”. She later called for volunteers to constitute the Akumazi-Umuocha HIV/AIDS response team. A good number of volunteers that cut across different walks of life responded; some pastors, traditional chiefs, students, youth, men and women and the committee was inaugurated by Dave Inyere the following day. Free T-shirts, calendars, educational materials and other IEC and BCC materials on HIV/AIDS were distributed to participants. The total population of adult participants is 285 out of which 171were males and 114 were females and 54 were children.

On 08/04/07, the Community HIV/AIDS program support team of 32 members was inaugurated by Dave Inyere, Utmost Caring World and APYIN at Akumazi-Umuocha. During the inauguration, they were advised that it is volunteer job and they will be trained as peer educators. The training will be handled by the Utmost Caring World team while Dave Inyere will finance the instructional materials and logistics required for the training. The five days training was conducted Saturdays from 9:00am to 5:00pm. The entire team was urged to hold meeting once a month to discuss and plan their programs. The Chairman of the support team is Chief J. Ebegboni, Mr. Samuel O. Ogboi is the Secretary while Mr. Julian O. Ifeanyichukwu is the PRO.
